Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

The Rotary Auction & Rummage Sale is arguably the largest event on Bainbridge Island that fulfills the three tenets of waste reduction: Reuse, reduce, recycle.

  • Items that are sold are reused and thus reduce the need to buy new. 
  • Items that are unsold are reused through donations to nonprofit organizations or recycled to the greatest extent possible.

To accomplish our goals of environmental stewardship, the Rotary Auction developed two innovative programs: The Green Team and Harvesting.

The Green Team: Making a Difference

Our Green Team is a large group of hardworking volunteers dedicated to ensuring that items not sold at the Rotary Auction & Rummage Sale go to good use, rather than to the landfill. This team works throughout the pre-Auction period and Sale Day to sort, recycle, and identify for repurposing, all the materials that cannot be sold. Harvesting: New Homes for Unsold Items

While we do our best to sell all donated items (an estimated 150,000!), there are always things left unsold at the end of the Sale. We have developed a network of local nonprofit organizations to take many of these items and put them to good use. We are pleased that these items find new homes and help support local community organizations. These partnerships are also important in helping keep items that have further use from going to the landfill.

Interested in becoming a Harvester?

We encourage any organization, school, artist, or group that can make use of specific unsold items to register with as a Harvester. Pre-Sale Harvesters work with us to remove items that can’t or won’t be sold either due to volume, size, or content. Post-Sale Harvesters are nonprofit organizations interested in showing up at the close of the sale (2:00pm) to collect items that have not sold but are of benefit to their organizations.
